Helen C Yates : Artist, Sculptor
My practice begins with what the landscape reveals : traces of lives, imprints of the past, fragments of information and objects held within the earth for millennia. I translate these echoes into a visual interpretation of the tension that exists in the human experience: the pull between inherited belief and the possibility of renewal, the moveable and the static, certainty and change. Materials form a core function in this dialogue; wax for it’s potential for fluidity and warmth; plaster for it’s smooth, cool immovability. Aesthetics are as important as concept in my work, I use the tactile nature of the materials to illicit an emotional response, much as we are drawn to the remnants of ancient history that vividly connect us to our predecessors.
I work in the studio on pieces that begin with an urge to explore and discover ways to communicate a theoretical and emotional process.
Sometimes it is hard to decide when a piece is finished, as works go through multiple re imaginings. Works become available for sale once these re imaginings conclude. Commissions from the Public and Private sector are welcomed.
Have a look through my art works , both past and present and please feel free to contact me and I will endeavour to answer all queries promptly.
